Bayview Yards

For a term-long heritage recording project, I collaborated with four other Architectural Engineering students to create a detailed heritage record of the City Works Building #4 (now called The Innovation Centre) located at 7 Bayview Yards in Ottawa. The project involved multiple site visits to analyze the building and collect data. We applied the heritage recording techniques and technologies learned in class to document the building’s tangible and intangible aspects that contributed to its heritage designation.

Goal

The goal of this project was to analyze and document the heritage building, including its history, heritage values, and character-defining elements, and to produce a Statement of Significance reflecting its importance to the community. Our documentation included detailed photogrammetric elevations of two building façades, hand sketches, and 3D scans of character-defining elements to capture the current condition of the building.

Challenges

The main challenge of this project was creating the photogrammetric model using RealityCapture. The software was new to our team and had difficulties aligning total station points with the images to generate a scaled model of the selected elevations. To overcome this, we manually aligned the total station points on the model, which was time consuming but ultimately allowed us to produce an accurate model.

My Role

My contributions included creating both site plans, which required multiple iterations and learning new GIS software, as well as assisting on site by operating the total station and taking numerous photographs to generate the model.
