Bayview Yards

For a term long heritage recording project myself and 4 other architectural engineering students created a detailed heritage recording of the City Works Building #4 now called The Innovation Centre located on 7 Bayview Yards in Ottawa. This project required multiple site visits to the heritage site to analyze the building and gather data. We took all the heritage recording techniques and technologies we learnt in class to properly document the buildings tangible and intangible aspects which reflect why it was designated a heritage building in the first place.

Goal

The goal of this project was to analyze and document the heritage building at 7 Bayview Yards in Ottawa. To do this we analyzed the history, heritage values and character defining elements of the building to determine why it was designated and its importance to the community and from this created a statement of significance. We made detailed photogrammetric elevations of two of the buildings sides, along with multiple hand sketches and 3D scans of character-defining elements to document the current condition of the building.

Challenges

The main challenge for this project came from trying to create the photogrammetric model using RealityCapture. This software was new to our team and it had troubles aligning the points from the total station with the images to create a scaled model of the 2 selected elevations. To overcome this we had to switch to manually aligning the total station points onto the model, this just took longer and became tedious but we were able to solve this problem and create a good model.

My Role

I was in charge of creating both of the site plans which took multiple iterations to get to a final refined iteration and required learning new GIS softwares. I also helped on site by working the total station to gather points to use on the model and taking many photos to help generate the model.
